Aloha! My name is Kristofer Moore; owner of All Pro Garage Door Repair. As a garage door spring specialist, I have a good amount of experience replacing springs. Perhaps the most common question I get from customers is, "What do the springs do? Do they just counter-balance the weight of the door?" To which I say, NO. They LIFT the door. They lift most of the weight of your garage door which probably weighs between 150 and 400 pounds. If your door is metal, it is probably NOT an aluminum garage door, as you probably would have spent a LOT of money for that. Most metal garage doors are galvenized steel. The motor is ONLY supposed to be lifting maybe 15-20 pounds on a typical light residential garage door. Unfortunately, all too often, the motor is being worn out lifting too much weight due to poorly calculated springs done by someone who may just knock on the door and say, "hmmm... feels like a set of 218's." Or maybe he used a spring gauge to measure the old springs and then selected the pre-made springs on his truck that most closely match the old ones. My objection to this method is, what if the old springs were not calculated to lift the full weight of the door? What if a set of springs calculated to lift 200 pounds were installed on a garage door that weighs 300 pounds? Then the technician installs a set of matching springs. Then your motor will have to lift approximately 100 pounds EVERY time you open it. What if the operator arm rips off the door and the door comes down and crushes your son or daughter? 100 pounds is amplified depending on the height the object was when it fell. Just recently I did weigh a door and found that it was missing A WHOLE SPRING. It had only one spring that I calculated to be rated to lift about half the weight of the heavy wood door!
I weigh your garage door and custom-make your garage door springs at your home according to the weight of your door and how long you want them to last. I calculate the dimensions for your new garage door springs using modern advanced spring calculating technology based on the weight of the door and dimensions of your garage door system and based on what cycle rating you want for your springs. In other words, you tell me how long you want your springs to last or how many cycles you want your springs to be rated for (or how many times you want your springs to open and close the door before they will be likely to break (i.e. 10,000 cycles, or 30,000 cycles, or 50,000 cycles). One cycle = up and down 1 time. Garage door springs are rated to open and close a certain number of cycles before they break. This is an unfortunate matter of physics. They do not last forever. My reasoning behind weighing your garage door and custom-making your springs is because all too often I have gone to people's homes and checked the balance of their door and found that the springs that had been installed on their garage door were way too weak for the weight of their door. This seems to be a common cause of damage to garage door motors.
My springs are cut and coned on the spot at your home in ONE service call and can be done in quick time, even for emergency calls. My springs are made in the USA out of of oil-tempered steel for it's torsion strength retention and low maintenance requirements. They are also coated for rust prevention. Springs are conservatively priced, discounted when you purchase them as a set of two.
